Why it’s a Good Idea to Shop for Furniture during Labor Day

While Labor Day’s exact origins are disputed, it is widely accepted that the idea arose as early as 1882 (see this article from the US Department of Labor). This American national holiday is commonly known for being a three-day weekend, and barbecues, and signals an end to the Summer. So, why is this holiday so popular within the furniture industry?

Labor Day’s Meaning

While many view Labor Day as a reprieve from work, signifying the end of summer, its essence resides in actively serving as a dedicated occasion to honor and acknowledge the priceless contributions that American workers have contributed to our nation. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.

Labor Day Furniture Sales

Furniture retailers long ago offered working-class Americans steeper discounts during the Labor Day weekend. In cooperation with and consideration for the average working American. It made sense to provide deals to coincide with kids going back to school and the unofficial end of Summer. In the beginning, furniture stores were owned and operated by average working-class citizens. The desire to help out their fellow citizens came naturally.

Retailers also want to move old inventory to make room for new styles. You can find better deals on furniture around this holiday weekend because consumer demand is on the rise. Furniture sales usually slow down in the summer, so retailers offer big promotions for Labor Day.
